Since our first gastric bypass in 2003, we have treated more than 5,000 patients; no other clinic in Australia has performed more gastric sleeve and bypass procedures than the team at Upper GI Surgery.

Our expert medical team is comprised of specialist surgeons, physician, nurses, dietitian, psychologist and admin staff, who all share a vision of collaborative and person-centred care. After surgery, you are supported on your weight loss journey with our Patient Aftercare Program (for up to 3 years) providing you with the tools you need to live a healthier, happier and longer life.

Most Common Bariatric Surgery Options

Gastric Sleeve

25 - 35% average weight loss*

A gastric sleeve restricts the volume of the stomach to 15-20% of its original size. A smaller stomach leaves a person feeling satisfied and ‘full’ after a much smaller quantity of food and increased appetite suppression between meals as a result of hormone changes in the stomach. As it doesn’t affect the small intestine, nutritional deficiencies are less likely. A short hospital stay of 1 – 3 days.

Gastric Bypass

30 - 50% average weight loss*

The ‘Gold Standard’ procedure, including Roux, Omega, SADI, Mini Bypass and banded Bypass operations, are the most frequently performed weight loss surgeries worldwide. Most of the stomach is ‘bypassed’, food enters a small gastric pouch before moving into a loop of the small bowel for digestion. Unlike a sleeve, this operation is reversible. The gastric bypass limits the volume of food consumed while altering ‘hunger’ signals as a result of hormone changes. A short hospital stay of 1- 3 days.

Gastric Band

15 - 20% average weight loss*

The Laparoscopic Gastric Band (LAGB) simplified is a silicone ring that (when inflated) reduces the space in your stomach for food to pass through. This slows down eating while suppressing appetite and reducing hunger as your nerves are stretched. It is reversible and one of the safest procedures, that does not change the way your insides work and requires shorter hospital stay.

Revision Surgery

Click for more info
All surgical procedures for obesity, both old and new, are designed to change how the person processes food. Although many of these procedures are designed to be permanent, in reality not all the effects of the surgery are permanent. “Revision surgery is quite common. To date I have performed about 1,000 re-operations on weight loss patients – I usually do two or three of these operations per week.” – A/Prof Michael Talbot
In addition to the most popular bariatric surgery procedures above, we also offer SADI, mini gastric bypass, endoscopic procedures and gastric balloon.

A word from A/Prof Talbot

“In so many other parts of medicine and surgery we are treating diseases, but not actually restoring our patients to the overall level of health they wish to obtain. The average 30-50 kg weight loss we can offer patients having bariatric surgery not only helps with disease but restores a level of overall health and function they haven’t had for years or decades. The joy we see on our patient’s faces when they finally get the chance to live without weight problems is why we do it.”

FAQs

Am I a candidate for surgery?

The requirements for people wishing to undergo bariatric surgery for a weight problem are listed below. The most important determinant of eventual success regardless of the type of treatment chosen is understanding that an operation, although facilitating weight loss, will not create weight loss magically, rather it will help you eat less.

We are able to lend support to help make this happen, but the ability of the person undergoing surgery to work with the operation is the key to successful ongoing weight loss.

People suitable for bariatric surgery:

  • BMI greater than 35
  • BMI greater than 30–35, with medical complications
  • No hormonal cause for obesity
  • Obesity present for at least five years and persisted despite adequate attempts with other weight loss measures
  • No alcohol or drug abuse
  • Absence of major, untreated psychiatric conditions
  • Ability to comply with long-term vitamin supplements and follow-up after surgery
  • Actively supportive GP

How much does bariatric surgery cost?

We provide tailored, patient-centred care that includes varying bariatric surgery options and follow-up care by our team to ensure that you achieve your weight loss goals. Because each patient is different, therefore each treatment plan is different, it is very difficult to provide a one size fits all cost example.

By completing the enquiry form and by making an appointment with one of the specialists here at UGIS, they can discuss your individual needs and provide an accurate quote for surgery costs (for both insured and uninsured patients).

Do you provide payment plans for surgery?

Yes, we do. Please contact our team using the enquiry form above to learn about different payment options that may be available to fund your bariatric surgery. (Including options such as Lay By Surgery and early access to superannuation.)
