We held our third support group of 2016 for our weight loss surgery patients on Thursday 25th August, at our clinic at St George Private Hospital. This time our key speaker was our own bariatric dietitian Tania Chaanine.
Tania is an Accredited Practicing Dietitian, Accredited Nutritionist and a member of the Dietetics Association of Australia; with Tania’s extensive knowledge on the subject she chose to discuss ‘Healthy Eating after Bariatric Surgery’.
Tania explained to the attendees of the support group what makes up a healthy diet post-weight loss surgery, this included:
- Protein rich foods that patients should be eating as part of their diet.
- Clearing up any misconceptions on the different types of fats found in foods, and the role of including ‘good’ fats in your diet.
- Advice on the types of carbohydrate foods to include in your diet.
As well as providing information on correct food choices, Tania provided some insightful advice and guidance on food preparation and ‘being organised’ when planning your meals in order to avoid having to make unhealthy choices. For example:
- Planning your meals for the week ahead in advance.
- Cooking your meals in advance and freezing meals in small portions.
- Packing lunches the night before.
Tania often contributes to our blogs that we publish about good nutrition and diet, as well as maintaining a healthy lifestyle following weight loss surgery. You can read our blogs online here if you would like more information.
Attending our support groups has been proven to help our patients not only lose weight initially, but keep them on track to maintain that weight loss and not slip back into unhealthy habits of the past. Our next support group meeting will be held on Thursday 24th of November at 7pm – if you are interested in attending please call our team on 02 9553 1120 to book your place.
