Lifestyle change is essential after bariatric surgery to maintain weight loss and improve overall health. Fortunately, Sydney is a city that makes it easier to embrace these changes, offering countless ways to stay active, eat well and build new, healthy habits.

Make the Most of Sydney’s Outdoors

Sydney’s stunning outdoor spaces are perfect for incorporating exercise into your daily routine. Whether it’s a leisurely stroll through the Royal Botanic Gardens or Centennial Park, a brisk walk along the Bondi to Coogee coastal path, or a hike in the Blue Mountains, these activities help boost your energy levels and mood – important factors after bariatric surgery.

Sound a bit much? Think of it as a way to set new goals. For example, you might not get from Bondi to Coogee the first time, you may choose Bronte or even Tamarama until you get closer and closer to the finish line one day. The city’s weather means you can enjoy these activities almost all year round, getting fresh air and plenty of vitamin D.

Join Sydney’s Active Community

Staying active is important after surgery and Sydney offers a variety of fitness groups and classes for all levels. From gyms to gentle yoga sessions to energising dance classes, there’s something for everyone. Being part of a fitness community can provide motivation and support, which is key to long-term success after bariatric surgery.

Embrace Healthy Eating

After bariatric surgery, what you eat will determine your weight loss and your ability to maintain that weight loss long-term. Sydney makes healthy eating easy with its fresh food markets, organic stores and a range of healthy takeaway options. Whether you’re shopping for local produce or picking up a quick salad or soup, Sydney offers plenty of ways to keep your diet on track on the go.

Stay Active in Your Everyday Life

Sydney’s extensive public transport network and busy city layout offer plenty of ways to add extra steps to your day. Hop off the bus a stop early or take the stairs instead of the lift to increase your daily activity. Rather than driving your car, consider if you could walk or cycle the same journey instead. Small, consistent efforts like these can greatly enhance your post-surgery progress without having to take extra time out of your day to exercise.

Not in Sydney? No Worries!

If you don’t live in Sydney, don’t worry – Australia is full of ways to stay active and healthy. Explore local parks and walking trails, make the most of the sunshine by getting outside, and if there are no healthy takeaways nearby, learn to enjoy cooking simple, nutritious meals at home. There are also plenty of online fitness classes and resources to help you stay motivated and on track.

If you are living in Sydney and considering bariatric surgery, contact our clinic to find out more or make an appointment with one of our specialists.
