Bariatric surgery has helped many people achieve significant weight loss and improved health. By reducing the stomach’s size/altering the digestive tract, bariatric surgery can lead to incredible transformations. However, like any major procedure, it comes with its own set of challenges – today we are talking about “dumping syndrome.”
What Causes Dumping Syndrome?
Dumping syndrome is most common with gastric bypass surgery. During a gastric bypass, a small pouch is created from the stomach and is directly connected to the small intestine, bypassing a large portion of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine. This change can cause food to move too quickly from the stomach into the small intestine, leading to nausea, abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, dizziness and rapid heart rate.Â

How to Avoid Dumping Syndrome
If you’ve had bariatric surgery, there are several steps you can take to minimise the chances of experiencing dumping syndrome:
Avoid/Limit Sugary and High-Fat Foods –Â foods high in sugar or fat can trigger dumping syndrome. Avoid sugary drinks, sweets and fatty foods, opting instead for high-fibre, nutrient-dense options.Â
Eat Smaller Meals – by eating less, this reduces the amount of food entering your small intestine at once.
Chew Slowly and Thoroughly – taking your time with each bite can help your stomach digest food more effectively and prevent it from emptying too quickly.
Separate Liquids from Solids – avoid drinking 30 minutes before and after meals. This practice helps prevent rapid emptying of the stomach.
Include More Protein – protein-rich foods can slow down digestion and provide more sustained energy, which can help manage symptoms of dumping syndrome.Â
How to Manage Dumping Syndrome If It Happens to You
Even with precautions, you might experience dumping syndrome from time to time. Here’s what you can do to manage the symptoms:
Lie Down After Eating – this can slow the movement of food through your digestive tract, helping to manage dizziness or nausea.
Stay Hydrated – drinking plenty of water throughout the day can help balance the fluids in your body, especially if you’re experiencing diarrhoea.
Consider Supplements – taking a fibre supplement may help regulate digestion and reduce symptoms.
Consult Your Doctor – if dumping syndrome becomes a frequent issue, consulting with a specialist or dietitian can help fine-tune your diet and identify specific triggers.
