At Upper GI Surgery we encourage all our weight loss surgery patients to attend our quarterly support group meetings as part of their post-surgery aftercare. Those who attend the support groups find them to be an important part of their lifestyle change. At each support group we discuss topics that deal with different issues patients may face following surgery and help deal with these situations correctly.
The topic of this support group was ‘plastic surgery options post weight loss surgery’, a topic chosen to be discussed in more detail by regular attendees of the support group. Although weight loss surgery is a procedure used to help patients reach a healthy weight and all of the health benefits that come from that, often patients also expect a positive body image following surgery, as well as health benefits.
Our support group meeting featured guest speaker Dr Darrell Perkins, who is a plastic surgeon at St George Private Hospital. His presentation covered different plastic surgery procedures that patients following weight loss surgery might consider after losing a substantial amount of weight. The different surgical options that were discussed were abdominoplasty (more commonly known as a tummy tuck), breast augmentation, liposuction and contouring options.
Although the primary reason for patients to undergo weight loss surgery is to help them return to a healthy weight and healthier lifestyle, it can be disheartening to work so hard to lose weight and still not be happy with your body. Often issues such as excess skin or appearance of loose skin are only considered afterthoughts following weight loss surgery, and plastic surgery options can be expensive.
All of our patients found this topic very interesting and informative, especially the before and after photos of patients following plastic surgery. You can find out more about Dr Perkins work on his website www.drdarrellperkins.com.au.
