Deciding to proceed with any bariatric surgical procedure is a big decision; with a lot to consider such as time off for a hospital stay, recovery from surgery, costs, lifestyle changes such as diet and new supplements/vitamins to take daily, to name a few. So we understand that it is both difficult and frustrating to have to wait for the opportunity to make your first step towards your healthier lifestyle.

The current pandemic gripping the world has brought many things that we know to a halt, such as meeting up with our loved ones, visiting our favourite restaurant for date night or even sending the kids to school. And unfortunately on that list here in New South Wales has also been elective surgery, which bariatric surgery falls under (see latest updates here).

But what COVID-19 has shown us is that your health is as important as ever. Obesity-related conditions have been seen to worsen the effects of COVID-19, for example, people with diabetes or heart disease are more likely to suffer from complications. Although the data is still being updated every day, several studies are already demonstrating that a higher proportion of patients who had to be admitted to intensive care suffer from obesity.

Fortunately, Australia’s health system and society seem to have fared well during the pandemic, and we are seeing changes being brought forward which will soon allow elective surgery to resume full time. But in the meantime, it is important not only to remember why you want to achieve a healthier lifestyle but what you can be doing while you wait.

What to do while you wait for bariatric surgery

Keep as active as possible – consider introducing low impact exercise that is within your comfort zone. Walking is a great way to exercise, as you can keep to your own pace while enjoying some fresh air. If you can, try taking the stairs. Small changes to your daily routine can make a big difference.

Follow your pre-surgery diet – after bariatric surgery, you will need to follow a strict diet as part of your recovery process, and then as part of your weight loss journey. Before you have surgery your surgeon will ask you to follow a very low-calorie diet (VLCD) to reduce the size of your liver to make it safer to operate. While you are waiting for surgery we encourage you to practise making healthier food and drink choices.

  • Eat fresh, home-cooked meals. Often ready meals can be very low in nutritional value and high in calories. Take this time to learn some different meals that you can prepare for the whole family. Lean proteins, plenty of fruit and vegetables.
  • Avoid snacking. If you try to focus on having three balanced meals a day and don’t snack, then you can reduce your calorie intake significantly. If you do feel the need to snack, try finding healthy options that you like such as chopped veggies and hummus.
  • Don’t drink your calories. Staying hydrated is very important and the best way to do this is by drinking a sufficient amount of water each day. If you’re not a big fan of water, try adding some fruit or low-calorie cordial. Avoid sugary fizzy drinks at all costs, and don’t forget that alcohol contains a very high number of calories.

Take this time to discover new healthy meals and activities that you enjoy, as this will make your transition after surgery into this new healthier lifestyle easier. And if you can lose some weight before going into surgery then that would also be a welcome side effect.
